Position Paper Tips and Guidelines

Hi everyone,

Now that position papers are almost due, I wanted to review expectations and formatting for position papers. As a single topic crisis committee, Carthage Crisis has a different position paper guide than other committees, so it's important that you read this post or the position paper guidelines at this link.

In terms of formatting and length, papers should be single-spaced, written in Times New Roman size 12 with 1 inch margins, and no more than 5 pages long (excluding works cited/bibliography pages). We expect every paper to be thoroughly cited in MLA format (check this link for more information on MLA citations). If you're finding research difficult because there is little to no information about the figure you're representing, feel free to email us or comment on this post for specific tips!

In terms of content, papers should be split into 5 sections:

  1. The Conflict to Date from Your Perspective (10%) (~1⁄2 page)
  2. Your Position and Motivations (20%) (~1 page)
  3. Your Game Plan (50%) (~2 pages)
  4. Response to Questions to Consider (15%) (~1 page)
  5. Works Cited (in MLA), as well as in-text citations

Each section will be graded on a scale according to the rubric, which can be found with the position paper guidelines linked above. Papers will be submitted through BMUN's online portal, Huxley. You can find a submission guide with the position paper guidelines above.

The last thing I want to stress is that position papers are a way for you to demonstrate that you've thought deeply about the issues at hand, and will help prepare you for committee. They are not for you to try and prove to the dais that you've done lots of research or impress us with your knowledge of the topic. We're looking for analysis, not just facts.

But if you've read this post, then you're probably in pretty good shape :) Good luck, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need help!
